Wyatt of Independence, Kan., graduated from flight training on July 28, 1943, at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama. In December, he deployed to Italy with the 100th Fighter Squadron, part of the 332nd Fighter Group. The 100th Fighter Squadron flew its first combat mission on Feb. 5, 1944.
On April 15, the 332nd Fighter Group moved from Montecorvino, Italy, to Capodichino near Naples. On April 19, a few hours after the Luftwaffe raided the base, Wyatt’s P-39 Airacobra misfired. The second lieutenant was killed when his plane crashed.
Wyatt is buried at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Italy. According to a government database, he was awarded a Purple Heart for his military service.
