1st Lt. Maurice Pompey was born in South Bend, IN. He was a student at Howard University when WWII began. He was assigned to the 618th Squadron of the 477th based at Atterbury Army Air Field in Columbus, Indiana for combat training.
During World War II, Arizona’s air fields were home to black aviators. Black bomber crews who had recently graduated from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and other primary training facilities received transitional B-25 training at Douglas Army Air Field, Douglas, Arizona, before assignment to the 477th Bombardment Group at Godman Field, Kentucky. Other black pilots received instruction at Marana Army Air Field north of Tucson.
Lieutenant Pompey graduated from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and was sent to Douglas where he and his crew received training on the B-25 medium-range bombers, and then was assigned to the 477th Bombardment Group at Godman Field, Kentucky.
