The CAF Red Tail Squadron would like to thank all of our supporters who made donations to fund the engine replacement for our P-51C Mustang, the Tuskegee Airmen. We want to show you first-hand an example of the return on your donation investment to our organization.
Recently our dedicated crew worked hard, giving up an entire weekend to install the new engine with the assistance of the folks from AirCorps Aviation, specialists in the restoration, maintenance, and rebuilding of vintage WWII aircraft. The group’s time and effort was spent meticulously preparing the new engine for installation, setting and bolting in place, and connecting lines. It was a huge undertaking, and it couldn’t have been accomplished without the support of our generous donors.
The work took place at the AirCorps hangar in Bemidji, MN.
“Installation is a delicate process,” said Steve Kaminsen, CAF Red Tail Squadron safety officer and crew chief. “The engine weighs over 1,600 pounds and with clearances of 1/8″ in some areas positioning is very important.”
