Pilots used manual flight computers to plot their routes. This dead-reckoning flight computer belonged to original Tuskegee Airman Dr. Fenton B. Sands. Sands was a First Lieutenant Navigator-Bombardier with the 617th Bombardment Squadron of the 477th Composite Group. He was a member of the very first 22 black navigator-bombardiers.
