Leland Pennington wrote, as part of the Monroe HS Aviation Studies Club. A poem titled “God Is My Copilot”.
Flt Officer Pennington flew the P-51B-10-NA Mustang, which he named “Lucy Gal” after his wife back home.
During a bomber escort mission Apr 21, 1945, his P-51B had mechanical problems and he headed to Zara*, Italy/Yugoslavia (now Zadar, Croatia) to land. He disappeared and crashed into either the sea or one of the islands a few miles west of Zara. His remains were not recovered; he is memorialized in Nettuno, Italy.
