Armstrong experienced a traumatic event which resulted in loss of life on April 1, 1945. Recorded circumstances attributed to: “Hostile, died, Killed in action”. Incident location: Austria.

He was killed returning from a mission escorting B-24’s on a mission to bomb St. Polten, Austria. He and Lt. Walter P. Manning were both shot down and killed. One went in with his aircraft and one parachuted but it is not known which did which.
