The diorama is my attempt to conjure up for an observer the gut feeling of what it was probably like to escort a mass of bombers through hostile skies. Visitors to my office invariably suck in their breath at first sight of it, and that’s the pay-off for me. I’ve never felt that historical writings and spoken testimonials have the same emotional power to engage one.
