CAF Red Tail Squadron – Event Update New Orleans Open House at Lakefront Airport
Dates: May 22-25, 2013
Event: New Orleans OPEN HOUSE
Location: Lakefront Airport, Flightline First
Attendance: Estimated to be over 1,500 people
The CAF Red Tail Squadron rolled into New Orleans Lakefront Airport for 4 days of inspirational and historical lessons for local students and the general public. Sponsored by Flightline First, the National WWI Museum and the CAF Red Tail Squadron blended their resources to create a very unique World War II history lesson at the Lakefront Airport. Participants not only were educated on the efforts of the Tuskegee Airmen, but they also learned about the enormous truck convoy system driven by African-American soldiers who supplies to the front lines after the D-Day invasion.
The National WWII Museum’s own Red Ball Express mobile outreach program was on site with WWII Artifacts, uniform reproductions and children’s activities. Students had the opportunity to wear reproductions of the gear of a Tuskegee Airmen or Rosie the Riveter and post with a backdrop of iconic propaganda posters, as well as see the RISE ABOVE movie and the P51-C Mustang.
Visitors received a very special treat, as Original Tuskegee Airman, Calvin Moret was available to sign autographs and share his stories. There were so many young people leaving with cherished photos and brochures autographed by Mr. Moret on Saturday.
Educational Outreach – The World War II Museum invited area students and over 600 children were inspired by the efforts of the CAF Red Tail Squadron and the National World War II Museum.
