Ewing was from Helena (Phillips County) and graduated from the 44-F-TE class on June 27, 1944.
Upon completion of Advance Training at TAAF all of the members of 44-F-TE Ewing was assigned to Mather Field, Calif for B-25 Transition Training. F/O James Ewing Jr. joined the 477th (Med) Bombardment Group at Godman Field, KY on October 7, 1944 and was assigned to the 619th Bomb Sq. (M) at Atterbury AAF, Columbus, Ind. on October 9, 1944.
On a routine cross-country flight from Godman Field in Kentucky to Gunter Field in Montgomery, Alabama, Ewing and six other crew members perished when their B-25J Mitchell bomber (tail #44-30184) crashed in a swamp eight miles northeast of Gunter Field.
