Denny C. Jefferson graduated from Midland Army Airfield, Midland Texas as a Flight Officer and Aerial Bombardier with Class 44-45B on November 4, 1944. He joined the 477th (Med) Bombardment Group at Godman Field, KY on November 9, 1944 and was assigned to the 616th Bomb Sq. (M) on December 2, 1944.
Flight Officer Jefferson was a member of the “E” Squadron, 118th AAF Base Unit was a Tuskegee Airman. He was the only Arkansan arrested at Freeman Field in Seymour, Indiana, on 13 April 1945, when 101 U.S. Army Air Forces officers were taken into custody after an organized demonstration against Jim Crow practices at an all-white Officers’ Club. Two months later, on a routine cross-country flight from Godman Field in Kentucky to Gunter Field in Montgomery, Alabama, F/O Jefferson and six other crew members perished when their B-25J Mitchell bomber (tail #44-30184) crashed in a swamp eight miles northeast of Gunter Field. The six other airmen were:
