Flight Officer William P. Armstrong of Providence, RI graduated from Tuskegee Army Air Field in class 44-H-SE on September 8, 1944. Soon after he completed his final combat training, he was deployed overseas, flying bomber escort missions in the P-51 Mustang. On Easter Sunday April 1, 1945, Armstrong was killed in action when his plane was shot down during an air battle following a bombing mission in Austria.
The Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame issued this certificate of recognition posthumously to his family in 2009.
