The service of Tuskegee Airman Leonard R. Willette, killed in action September 8, 1944, is memorialized at the intersection of Stephen and Academy streets in Belleville, NJ, near the home he grew up in with his family. Willette graduated from Tuskegee Army Air Field on February 8, 1944 with class 44-B-SE. His aircraft, named Wrong Woman, experienced engine trouble and went down in Germany following an escort mission of B-17s over Munich. Willette was unable to bail out. He is laid to rest in Avold, France.
